Young Generals learn the hard way
Oceanside Generals suffer heartbreaking loss to formidable Nanaimo Bucs
The Oceanside Generals could have been the pirates last night against the Nanaimo Buccaneers.
But instead, the Generals marched home a little bit disappointed after giving up a goal with the man-advantage in the last five minutes and ended up with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss, their second in the new Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season. They lost their first game 11-3 to the Campbell River Storm on Sept. 1.

Josh is the founder of the non-profit organization “Consistency Coaching” and is currently a player for the expansion VIU Mariners playing in the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL). Josh learnt how to play hockey in Chelmsford, England. With over 5 years of Jr. A experience and representing the Great Britain World Junior team Josh brings experience of the ups and downs hockey brings to a player and how to deal with it. He helps athletes consistently set and achieve their goals whilst teaching them core values such as determination and integrity along with many other values not only for hockey but for life.
Josh will be working with the Generals players both on and off the ice surrounding the mental part of the game. His focus on both individual and team oriented goals will help to develop our players for not only this season but for their future. Josh’s unique skill set is an exciting addition to our coaching staff as whole.
“We are very excited to have Josh as part of the Generals family” says team president Gerry Bickerton “His focus on the mental side of the game will really help push our players to excel. He is a tremendous young man who fits into what we are trying to accomplish throughout our entire organization. Our players should be able to learn a lot from him this season and grow as not only hockey players but also as young men.”
“I’m thrilled to be involved with a community run club that is local and in the same town where I founded my non-profit organization” commented Josh. “After sitting down with head coach Jesse Hammill and team president Gerry Bickerton, it is clear that we have a common goal to see success not only for the team but individually for the players. Over the season we will be constantly setting goals and steps to achieve those goals to give our team the best chance to succeed and I’m here for them every step of the way. I’m excited to help better them as not only hockey players but as young men.”

Oceanside Generals: training camp report
PARKSVILLE — Close to 40 hockey players vying for a roster spot with the Oceanside Generals are trying to impress a new head coach this weekend.
Training camp for the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League club began Friday with workouts wrapping up today at Oceanside Place in Parksville.
This past off season seen some changes for the mid-island hockey team with Jesse Hammill taking over coaching duties from Gerry Bickerton.
Hammill was impressed with the effort he seen from rookies in camp along with some of the returning players, but he has a clear message after the Generals finished in 8th place with a record of 12-33-1-2 last season.
“We want you there on opening night but its down to you to be there opening night. There are no guarantees, last year’s team won one less game then the year before, most teams last year in the league won more games in one year than we have won in the last three, no job is safe”.
Gerry Bickerton is still with the hockey club taking over as team president and assistant coaches Scott Bickerton and Chris Lennox are back this season and will join Hammill on the bench.
“We need guys that can play two-way hockey, that are gritty, that are ignorant, that play the game almost back like the 80’s style. I’m not saying fighting, I’m saying the right way blocking shots, getting into the dirty areas giving everything you have every minute that you are on the ice”. said Hammill.
After camp wraps up today it make take some time for the roster to be set as a number of the players on the ice this weekend are expected to attend Junior A camps in the coming weeks.
The Generals will play two preseason games later this month and kick off the regular season on September 1st in Campbell River.
Day 1 of Main Camp was a huge success
Parksville, BC (August 11, 2017) – The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals Day 1 of Main Camp was a huge success. Players competed in a full fitness test which included a Beep Test, 40 yard dash, Standing Long jump, and distance running. “Jake Sweet, a Midget Tier 1 goalie from Prince George, looked very good in fitness testing. He did really well at the Beep test, the long run and the sprint.” said Head Coach Jesse Hammill. “Issac Finner was really strong in the fitness Testing as well. Returning players came back in great shape. Landon Dziadyk and Max Creighton led the way and looked ready for camp.”
After the fitness testing the players attended a seminar based on off ice training and mental preparation for high performance competition. Jim Miller, head fitness trainer for the Generals, spoke to the players about fitness, sleeping habits, nutrition, at what it takes to be a high performance athlete. The players will be working closely with Jim for the 2017/2018 season using his Parksville based facility, Jim’s Gym, as their go to training centre.
Josh Cook, founder of Consistency Coaching and current VIU |Mariner spoke about the mental preparation side of hockey. His motivational speech provided the players with a focus for not only training camp but for the season moving forward.
Goalies hit the ice first with our goalie coach Nolan Kurceba. This was followed be separate practice sessions for both teams in camp. “We are really excited for these young guys we have coming up here in Oceanside, lots of hard working kids, good skaters as well. We are really excited to have Jesse coaching this Season. It looks like we will be running good systems and power plays which is an exciting start to the season.” commented 19 year old, Gens veteran, Max Creighton.
“The first Day was pretty eventful, 2 ice sessions and a pretty good fitness test. Tomorrow will be a great day and lots of hustle from the boys today” said newcomer Isaac Finner from Nanaimo.
“I think a couple of guys pretty much came out of no where. We have only seen some of these players a couple of times at other camps and they were showing some great physical play today. Noah Goyer from Prince George has great speed, Isaac Finner had a awesome day also today. ” said Head Coach Jesse Hammill. “From our Veterans, Max Creighton leadership off the ice to Koby Adams who is taking the role of kind of the joker with the young guys, to Taylor Olson asking lots of question after practice to just go through stuff on the board which I really like. Players are really engaged so far.”
Players return to the Howie Meeker Arena at Oceanside Place for day 2 of camp today with games at 9:00am and 3:15pm as well as a second goalie session at 8:00pm. Camp will conclude Sunday with a last game at 9:00am. Camp is open to the public and the games are good and fast.
