Oceanside Generals stun Victoria, 3-2

Junior B club snaps seven-year losing streak to Cougars

The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals nearly let a two-goal lead slip away in their Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League game against the Victoria Cougars Friday night, Jan. 19.

In the end, though, everything was AO-Kay.

Brady Kay gathered a pass from fellow Nanaimo product Max Creighton in the low crease and snapped a one-timer past Victoria goalie Nate Reinhart at 4:47 of the third period to provide the game-winner, as the Generals ended a seven-year losing streak to the Cougars before a crowd of nearly 200 at Oceanside Place Arena.

The final 17.5 seconds were played with the Cougars skating with a 6-on-4 advantage, after they pulled Reinhart and Kay took a delay-of-game penalty for laying on the puck. Victoria put two shots on winning goalie Jacob Sweet and had several other stopped by the defence in a wild flurry of activity before the horn sounded and the celebration began.

“A couple of guys blocked some shots and came up huge; but I’m 20 years old and getting gray hair,” Creighton joked after the Generals beat the Cougars for the first time since 2011.

The game was the second of a home-and-home series between the teams on consecutive nights. On Thursday, the Generals (16-19-1-3) travelled to Victoria and jumped to a 1-0 lead, but were unable to hang on as VIJHL South-leading Victoria (21-16-1-1) rallied for a 5-3 victory.

Generals avenge loss in sinking Islanders

Oceanside stop two-game losing streak; will face Braves next on the road

Article by: MICHAEL BRIONES / Dec. 4, 2017 7:30 p.m.

The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals got even with the Kerry Park Islanders, scoring a slim 2-1 win in double overtime on on the road Sunday, Dec. 2.

It was sweet revenge for the Generals, who four nights earlier allowed a win to slip from their grasp in a 4-3 home loss to the Islanders. Sunday’s victory halted a two-game slide and came one night after they were shut out 6-0 by the Campbell River Storm at Rod Brind’Amour Arena Saturday night.

On Sunday, the Generals had to overcome a one-goal deficit after the Islanders scored the lone goal of the first period. Oceanside equalized on a goal by Brady Kay in the second period. It remained tied 1-1 at the end of the third. The teams couldn’t settle it until the 3-on-3 second overtime, when Cole Amado scored a breakaway goal at 1:10 to give the Generals the 2-1 victory.

Oceanside goalie Jacob Sweet was again key in the win as he stopped 42 shots to earn the win at the pipes and his 9th of the season. He earned the second star of the night.

On Saturday night in Campbell River, the Generals kept it close in the first period but in the dying seconds the Storm scored to grab a 1-0 lead. Then, 53 seconds into the second period the Storm scored again and went on to pour in four more unanswered goals.

Sweet provided the only highlight for the Generals as he made 41 saves of the 47 shots he faced. He earned the top star of the night.

On Nov. 29, the Generals hosted Kerry Park and seemed poised for a win while leading 3-2 with five minutes left to play.

But two sloppy defensive plays led to back-to-back goals by the Islanders, who skated off with a 4-3 win.

The Islanders opened the scoring but lost their momentum as they committed several penalties in the first period. The Generals made them pay by scoring two power play goals, courtesy of Brodie Smith and Ryan Rae-Arthur.

Things settled down a bit in the second, but it was the Islanders that equalized at 6:29. Less than a minute later, Andre Sutter put the Generals ahead again, 3-2, and it stayed that way until the last five minutes of the third when the Generals gave up the two heartbreaking goals that flipped the final result.

The Generals will hit the road again this week to face the Peninsula Panthers at Panorama Recreation Centre on Dec. 8. They return home on Sunday, Dec. 10, to face the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at 2:30 p.m.

Young Generals learn the hard way

Oceanside Generals suffer heartbreaking loss to formidable Nanaimo Bucs

The Oceanside Generals could have been the pirates last night against the Nanaimo Buccaneers.

But instead, the Generals marched home a little bit disappointed after giving up a goal with the man-advantage in the last five minutes and ended up with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss, their second in the new Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season. They lost their first game 11-3 to the Campbell River Storm on Sept. 1.

Generals head coach Bickerton steps down to become president

Hammill to take over coaching chores while also serving as general manager

The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals have shuffled their administration as they prepare for their next Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season.

Topping the list of changes was Gerry Bickerton’s resignation as head coach. He was handed a new role as president at the Generals’ annual general meeting held on May 8.

Jesse Hammill, who was hired midway through last season as general manager, has agreed to take over the head coaching responsibility. He will also continue to serve as general manager.

The Generals are also bringing back last season’s assistant coaches, Chris Lennox and Scott Bickerton.

“They are a few changes which we think are all positive and hopefully it’s gonna reflect that next season moving forward,” said Bickerton.

Hammill is no stranger to coaching, said Gerry Bickerton. He has been involved with hockey since a very young age. He played at all levels of minor and junior hockey before pursuing a professional career in Europe where he both coached and managed.

Bickerton said they’re aiming to be a lot more competitive next season and hoping to win more games.

“It’s important for us to have a full culture change, both off and on the ice,” said Bickerton

“There’s a lot of stuff and reasons why I made the move that I did to push the organization forward from an off-ice standpoint and basically get Jesse to push it from an on-ice standpoint. So we will see a lot of changes from both areas. It’s going to be a lot of work but we are really excited for it.”

The Generals have been busy recruiting players as well. They recently got commitments from two defencemen, Erik Hanus, who played with the North Island Silvertips of the BC Major Midget League, and Brandon Hannibal, who last year played for the Nanaimo Clippers Midget Tier 1 and was an affiliate player with the Generals where he played eight games.

Hanus, who stands at six foot five inches, could be an imposing figure on the Generals’ blue line. He is a strong, physical defenseman who can bring a steady supply of hard work and team play. Hannibal is a 5’7 smooth skater who sees the ice well and can execute great first passes.

The Generals will hold their main camp August 11-13.

Bickerton said he expects some of his veteran players to return but he won’t know for sure until they find out results of their Junior A tryouts.

“We as an organization want our players to progress to the next level,” said Bicketon.

During the course of the summer, the Generals plan to take part in some of the community events that include the Canada Day Parade on July 1 and helping at Beach Fest in August.
